Limestone - Environmental Cleanup
Limestone is used in the environmental cleanup of industrial applications, such as coal and petroleum coke fired electric energy plants. Coal mining combustions can release sulfur into the air, that can produce sulfuric acid when combined with water vapor. Sulfuric acid creates atmospheric contaminants, pollution and acid rain conditions. Limestone is an excellent reagent for the absorption of sulfur dioxide from fossil fuel emissions.
Limestone is also used of environmental cleanup for contaminated soil and hazardous waste sites. It is an alkaline material that reacts with sulfur gases, neutralizes acid conditions and removes sulfur oxides from hazardous waste. Limestone has the ability to convert sulfates into sulfides, neutralizing the harmful effects of sulfates and sulfuric acid discharges.
Limestone's efficiency at sulfur removal and comparatively low handling costs make it a cost-effective solution for environmental cleanups. It is safe and non-corrosive to steel and has no adverse effect on mechanical equipment efficiency. Blue Mountain Minerals is a local, reliable and inexpensive source of limestone. We currently supply limestone to many California power plants, allowing the plants to operate safely within their sulfuric emissions guidelines.
